40 More Days

40 more days. 40 more days. 40 more days. Now unless you can read my mind, you have no idea what I am talking about. There are only 40 more days until my much-needed summer vacation. After six classes, two jobs, and an internship I am more then excited for these days to pass. With the end of school and warm weather calling my name, I thought this would be a perfect time to say what my favorite things to do in Buffalo over the summer. Both to get me excited and possibly give you ideas. So here we go:

Vidler’s: For years my mother and I have made it a summer tradition to drive down to East Aroura and enjoy the area. We go to the farmers market to check out the fresh produce and then do a little shopping. This includes Vidler’s 5 & 10. We check out the seemingly never-ending rooms to see all the amazing stuff they have. After we have dinner at Picassos and then head home.

Albright Knox Art Gallery: So, I have always been interested in art, even though I have no ability to paint, draw, or sculpt. I love to look at the artwork and be amazed at what others can do. Also, the atmosphere always seems to be calm. I feel like its impossible to be mad in an art gallery. And if you go on the first Friday of the month it’s free so it’s kinda hard to be mad at that.

Erie County Fair: The best end to any summer is going to the Erie County Fair. The food, the shows, the shopping all make me happy for summer. I always go for a full day to get the experience from morning to night at the fair. And I always have to get Kettle Corn!

There’s also so many concerts and festivals here that I could not list them all but wanted to list a few of my favorites. Buffalo has a lot of exciting events to do over the course of the summer and is one of the reasons I want continue living here. To Europe and Back

Hello Red Door World. I have been gone for about two weeks and that is because from February 27th to March 9th I went to London, England on a school trip. The trip was amazing (apart from the eight-hour plane rides and the current sickness I now have because of it). I thought I would use this post to tell you what you need to see/do if you go to the London one day.

Now if you are anything like me and history is up your ally, I highly recommend the British Museum. This museum is three floors with seventy-eight rooms of artifacts from the Americas to the Middle East to Asia and of course Europe. The Rosetta Stone (pictured below) is just one of the many things you can see. There is also the world’s most famous chess set, mummies, and a Easter Island statue. Best part, all museums in Europe are free admission so it’s a fun and cheap pastime.

Rosetta Stone

Next, I would recommend St. Paul’s Cathedral. This beautiful church has a unique aspect to it. Now if you’re willing, you can walk up 528 steps to the top and get breath taking views of the city of London. I would not recommend this if you are afraid of heights or narrow spaces as it has both, but if you’re willing it is an amazing experience. If you were with me you got to hear me hyperventilating all the way to the top because heights are not my thing, but the view at the top was well worth it.

If you are a Harry Potter fan Platform 9 ¾ was right near my hotel. Now I will admit that I never read the Harry Potter series (I know bad English major) but coming from a hopeful future writer I can respect J.K Rolling who made a figment of her imagination this famous. For those willing to wait in line, you can take a picture and be just like Harry (pictured below). There is also a gift shop for every Harry Potter fan to love.

For sports fans, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is a surreal experience. To be able to see where the 2012 Summer Olympics were held was amazing. We walked inside the pool are and were able to take photos for one pound. Now they use the space for current games, and we were able to see a soccer (or football there) game. A small hike away are the Olympic rings, which I highly suggest you get a picture in front of.

If you are more on the athletic side, I recommend seeing Durdle Door. This is a beautiful rock formation created by the sea and has a calming feel to it. It does take quite a hike to get down there and it is muddy so dress for the weather.

Lastly, I would say to 100% take a photo with the ionic photo booth.

After the trip I was ready to go home. This is the first time I have travelled since the sixth grade. I was reminded how much I love and miss home. So as fun as London was, I am glad I’m back home.

Is my Passion your Passion?

According to the Urban Dictionary, “passion is when you put more energy into something than is required to do it. It is more than just enthusiasm or excitement, passion is ambition that is materialized into action to put as much heart, mind body and soul into something as is possible.”

Some people are passionate about sports, a favorite show or movies, being fit, eating healthy and making money. My passion is that I love making a difference in the community by helping people. I enjoy helping the community because you always have to be grateful for what you have and help others get to where they want to be. By volunteering I have learned a lot and it has help mold me into the young adult I have become.

This weekend I volunteer at the Sounds and Soul Gala at The Buffalo Grand Hotel, which was known as the Adam’s Mark Hotel. This community service opportunity was a great experience. The purpose of this event is to help fundraise money for the Buffalo Hearing and Speech. The Buffalo Hearing and Speech is a non-profit organization that offers women, men and children services in speech, hearing, communication and specialized education/learning needs. There vision is to, “be the premier resource for excellence in clinical and educational outcomes for children and adults regardless of their needs and abilities.”

If you would like to help check out these opportunities below:

*Stay tuned: As I add more upcoming community service events*

Habitat for Humanity: Help make a difference by painting, building or repairing a home for a low income family.

SPCA Serving Erie County: If you are an animal lover help SPCA by working hands-on with the animals, assisting in their administrative offices, or even helping out at events.

Get Involved, Get Involved, Get Involved.

Every year Victoria Secret picks two girls to be PINK Campus Reps for their campus. From there, the two Campus Reps hold a series of their own interviews to pick 5-7 girls to be on the Campus Team. The Campus Team helps the Reps with events throughout the semester. University at Buffalo is a part of this program, not every campus is though, mostly big schools. After a series of applications, awkward videos of me talking about myself and Skype interviews with the head of the Campus Rep program, I was so happy when I received an email that I got the position!

This experience as PINK Campus Rep has been a very rewarding one. The job of the Reps is to hold events and giveaways throughout the semester that are sponsored by PINK. Events include scavenger hunts on campus with prizes of VS merchandise, Christmas pantie giveaways, Victoria Secret Fashion Show viewing parties and more. I love seeing how happy girls get when they win the prizes or come to the giveaways and get free stuff. There is no better feeling than making someone’s day. Victoria Secret/PINK is a very well-known brand that most college girls shop at, which makes all the events we have very, very successful.

With my major being communications with a concentration in marketing and advertising, this experience has helped me explore the marketing world in a way I wouldn’t be able to inside a classroom. I’ve been exposed to real-life marketing experiences with a successful, nation-known company through the brainstorming, planning, set-up and holding of events. This has helped me validate my career interests and goals, which I am thankful for.

Overall, I encourage every college student to become as involved on campus as they possible can. Without overbooking yourself, becoming involved in programs like the PINK Campus Rep program can give you experiences, friendships/connections, insight on your career interests and more! None of that would be possible if you were taking your 3rd nap of the day in your dorm room. You only get a college experience once, so why not make the most of it? Get involved, get involved, get involved.
